Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) – KPLC meteorologist Ben Terry was honored by the National Weather Association on Wednesday.

Ben received a Special Achievement Award given for outstanding contribution to the science or practice of meteorology.

Terry was recognized for his public education work during Hurricane Laura despite the storm destroying his home. Shortly after the storm, Terry was diagnosed with cancer, but continued to provide weather forecasts from a hotel room in Houston, where he was receiving treatment.

“It’s almost two years since the day Hurricane Laura destroyed much of my viewing area,” Ben said in his acceptance speech. “While we are still recovering, Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana are poised to become stronger and better than ever.

After the recent announcement that his cancer is continuing to grow, Ben continues to receive aggressive therapy.

“The road to beat him this time isn’t as clear, and so the fight will be tougher, but I never give up and plan to give those of you in southwest Louisiana a forecast. as long as I can,” Ben said.
