Man rages as water bill triples due to housing association boiler error

A man says his water bill has tripled – because the boiler in his housing association flat has been leaking for a year. Swansea’s Ricky Bartlett spoke.

He says the water has been “running” in his boiler for almost 12 months. He says a repairman inspected the boiler on behalf of the housing association, Pobl.

He indicated that it was obsolete and needed to be replaced. But the housing association has yet to arrange for him to be replaced – leaving him furious.

Pobl told WalesOnline: “My boiler started working about 12 months ago, they [Pobl social housing] sent gassers from PH Jones [a heating and boiling repair company] and they said the back of my boiler needed to be replaced and they were asking for a new boiler [for me].

“I am classed as disabled and needed to get under the sink to turn off the water [but I couldn’t do it because of my disability] and the leaking water then rotted my kitchen cupboard. The water I lose every day is about 30 liters [due to the leak]. My water bill was £13 and now it’s £30 a month.”

A Pobl Group spokesman said: “Pobl’s sales team traveled to the site following reports of a leak to carry out urgent repairs, returning later to replace kitchen units that had been damaged by water. He added: “Mr Bartlett has recently contacted us again to report further issues and we will liaise with him to investigate further.

“This will involve looking into issues with his water bills as a priority. We would like to apologize to Mr. Bartlett for any inconvenience.”
