A project to restore a cemetery and register the names of patients and staff at Leavesden Hospital resulted in two awards for a history group.

The Leavesden Hospital History Association received two grand prizes at the Community Archives and Heritage Group awards ceremony last week.

The association won the Gathering and Preserving Heritage category for the magnitude of the work and efforts of the volunteers involved in the association, in particular the restoration of the old hospital cemetery in East Lane and the establishment of the ” register of names “of the graves of patients and staff at the site.

In addition, the association also received the highest scores in all three award categories and was recognized as the best community archives and heritage group, 2021.

This honor recognizes the volunteer work that the Leavesden Hospital History Association, in partnership with the Three Rivers District Council Recreation Department, has helped to collect, preserve and make their archives available and accessible to the public, academics and local schools. .

Some of their archives, which contain more than 400 artifacts dating back to 1870, are on display at the HIVE Heritage Center, located in Leavesden Country Park, and others can be accessed online at their website, www.leavesdenhospital.org. The association also plans to preserve, catalog and display more next year.

Leavesden Hospital History Association Founder Martin T Brooks said, “None of us embarked on this process for recognition, but for the common interest we have in finding, studying, preserving and promoting our local history and heritage.

“Without all the passionate volunteers we have, as well as the support of the Three Rivers District Council and the National Heritage Lottery Fund, none of this would have happened. Thus, all the recognition of these awards is shared with all those involved ”.

The Community Archives and Heritage Group is made up of over 716 groups, associations and organizations and is a special interest group within the Archives and Records Association (ARA).

The ARA is the leading professional body for archives, custody, records management and information governance in the UK and Ireland.
