THE PROPERTY IS FILLED WITH HEADSTONES HIDDEN BY HIGH BRUSHES AND FOUR-INCH THICK TREES. THE COUNCIL CHAIRMAN SAID AFTER MEETING WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL THEY NOW FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THEIR AUTHORITY TO CLEAN UP ABANDONED CEMETERIES LIKE THESE. Council has $175,000 to clean up abandoned graveyards

Jefferson County Cemetery Board moves closer to cleaning up abandoned and overgrown cemeteries. The cemetery board currently has $175,000 to begin to make some of the forgotten and neglected cemeteries in the area worthy. And after a recent meeting with the Alabama attorney general, the chairman of the board said he now has a better understanding of his power to act. Learn more in the video above. At a meeting Thursday, they debated offers to give Pine Hill Cemetery a makeover in McCalla. The council, which was set up five years ago, is also planning to beautify the Shadow Lawn cemetery in Birmingham. “By late fall, we should start to see progress in one, if not both, of these two cemeteries,” said cemetery board chairman Kory Hameen.
