Cemetery association asks for help with windstorm debris and repairs at Le Roy | Featured Story

LE ROY – After a series of windstorms in recent months, the Machpelah Cemetery Association is trying to clean up the damage left behind.

Sandy Parks, superintendent of the Machpelah Cemetery Association, said the group started cleaning up the cemetery when the weather warmed up, but since it dipped below freezing again, the effort has been put on hold again. .

“We are short of volunteers,” she says. “The cemetery does not have the equipment to remove large logs.”

Parks said one section suffered the most damage – three trees were damaged, along with another tree in the “newer” section.

There are also currently 12 tombstones that need to be repaired, one of which was shattered into pieces like a jigsaw puzzle. Others have been knocked off their foundations, which Parks doesn’t know if they can get back up without some support, though there are some that can be easily pushed back into place.

“I didn’t count them because we still have debris, so it’s hard to figure out how many,” Parks said. “But that’s the number I’ve seen so far.”

People can help clean up the Machpelah Cemetery Association by calling Parks at (585) 768-7070 or visiting the cemetery’s Facebook page. The parks can also be found in the Le Roy NY Then and Now Facebook group.
