Police arrest man after graves were disturbed at Footscray Cemetery

Detectives from the Maribyrnong Criminal Investigation Unit have arrested a man following an in-depth investigation into the disturbance of two burial grounds in Footscray in late January.

It is alleged that partial human remains were stolen from mausoleums in two separate incidents at Geelong Road Cemetery between Thursday January 27 and Tuesday February 1.

A 40-year-old Spotswood man was arrested today and is currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The man is expected to be charged with interference with the corpse of a human being and criminal damage.

Maribyrnong CIU executed a warrant in Mary Street today where they allegedly recovered what are believed to be the stolen partial human remains.

Local detectives worked tirelessly and with extreme sensitivity to thoroughly investigate this incident.

The investigation will continue and will continue.
