Pre-cyclone cleaning at Cairns Cemetery on Martyn Street

0

In anticipation of the next cyclone season, the Council will be cleaning the western section of the Cairns Cemetery Lawn on Martyn St.

Over time, the Council has seen an increase in unapproved ornaments and tributes placed at burial sites, such as glass and water containers, clothing, ornaments and other unsecured items which could become missiles in high winds and cause damage and pose a danger to the community.

In the interest of community safety and to ensure maintenance of the West Lawn Cemetery, Council Officers will remove the following:

  • All glass items
  • water containers
  • flowers and tributes damaged, deteriorated
  • unsafe, unapproved and dangerous items
  • tributes placed on grassed areas
  • tributes placed outside designated plots.

Families are encouraged to collect all important or valuable items by December 1, 2022, as the Council will not retain any removed items.

The Council’s Grave Ornamentation Policy, available on the Council’s website, outlines what is acceptable when laying tributes at gravesites.

The council will not remove white crosses which are in good condition and well secured.
