Matt Ryan’s difficult journey in the NBA

Ryan didn’t come to the NBA as a proven shooter and went through different universities.

The pandemic meant he couldn’t try out NBA teams like he had planned, so he took matters into his own hands.

“Our gym is closed” Ryan recalled while speaking to The Athletic.

“So what did I do? I went to Walmart, bought an outdoor hoop, set it up in the parking lot of my apartment in Chattanooga. And stayed in Chattanooga for two months .”

He needed to earn money through different jobs. One was at a cemetery, working at 7:00 a.m. cleaning the site and mowing the lawn, as his schedule was flexible and allowed him to work basketball.

“I haven’t heard a story like that, like mine,” Ryan told The Athletic.

“It takes my breath away. I can’t even believe this is my story, but it is what it is.

“I had about eight diapers and we’re right there [at the cemetery].”

He also worked as a food delivery driver for a while, but eventually got his break by signing for the Boston Celtics last season.

Now he has gone to LA Lakers and is ready to play off the bench for james lebronteam this season.
