A Corby cemetery is being extended so that residents can rest peacefully for years to come.

Five months of work to expand the Shire Lodge cemetery off Rockingham Road will begin in November and should be completed in spring 2022.

Work will begin once the North Northamptonshire Council obtains the building permit for the extension in 2020.

The boundaries of the existing cemetery will be extended to the southwest to create additional burial sites and space for memorial gardens and religious denominations.

Once completed, the site will be turned into a lawn cemetery.

Roads and paths will be created, but the rest of the area will be landscaped with lawn and only when necessary will the headstone borders be cut from the lawn.

The council said, where possible, work will be undertaken outside the current cemetery to reduce disturbance. However, visitors may experience minor inconvenience during the execution of the work, for which we apologize.

David Brackenbury, executive member of the North Northamptonshire Council for Growth and Regeneration, said: ‘Our priority is to give deceased residents a proper resting place, as well as to give their loved ones a peaceful place to visit and pay their respects. .

“For this reason, it is necessary that we carry out this work to extend the land of the cemetery. We are confident that our chosen contractors will be attentive and sympathetic when working to ensure that visitors experience as little disruption as possible. “

North Northamptonshire Council Chief Jason Smithers said: “The extension of the cemetery grounds is good news and will ensure that Shire Lodge Cemetery will continue to be a suitable resting place for years to come. Thank you to visitors for their patience during the work.

A notice board in the cemetery is regularly updated on the status of this work, but if you have any further questions you can contact North Northamptonshire Council Project Manager Dylan Smith on 07498 234 352.
